WHAT WE DO

At The Second Helpings Project CIC, we rescue surplus food and turn it into nourishing, home-cooked meals for individuals and families facing food insecurity. Through our community kitchen, market hub, and volunteer-powered team, we provide judgment-free support, batch-frozen meals. Our work reduces food waste, tackles hunger, and creates inclusive opportunities for people to cook, learn, and thrive together.

How we run

We collect surplus food through trusted redistribution partners, including Neighbourly and FareShare, helping to ensure good food is saved from going to waste and used where it is most needed.

Each Wednesday, we use the kitchen at Glossop Labour Club to carefully prepare this surplus food into nutritious, home-cooked frozen meals. All meals are prepared in line with food safety standards and clearly labelled to support safe storage and use at home.

On Thursdays, we distribute these meals free of charge to individuals and families who have contacted us directly or have been referred to us by a partner organisation. We provide what we can, based on the surplus available that week, with the aim of supporting people in a dignified, judgement-free way and helping stretch household food budgets.

As a surplus-led project, availability may vary from week to week, but our commitment remains the same: to reduce food waste, share good food, and support our community wherever possible.

How to use us

Collection is on Thursdays from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM

After you contact us, we will send you a short form to help us understand your needs and circumstances, including any allergies and the cooking facilities you have available.

While we do our best to be inclusive, we may not always be able to meet every requirement due to the nature of surplus food and our current capacity. If we are unable to offer suitable food straight away, you will be added to our waiting list and kept in mind should appropriate food become available in the future as the project grows.

Once we have confirmed that we are able to meet your needs, you will be invited to collect a food package from us. Most of the food we provide is frozen, so we ask that you are able to take it home and place it in a freezer as soon as possible to ensure food quality and safety.

Please read all labels carefully, as these include cooking instructions and nutritional information. Occasionally, we may also have additional surplus food that cannot be turned into frozen meals. Where possible, this will be redistributed, however availability cannot be guaranteed and should not be relied upon when requesting support from us.
